Sexuality in Conversation: An Inventory
Prof. Dr. Stefan Timmermanns from Frankfurt UAS publishes article on sexual education in the study of social work / book presentation on November 16, 2020
Sexual education is a lifelong process in which sexual identity is shaped and appropriated by dealing with one’s own environment. It is important to accompany this process through education, information and relationship offers so that people can develop and live their sexuality in a self-determined and self-confident manner. Social workers in particular have the task of supporting their development. But how can sexual pedagogical competence be imparted in the study of social work? This is the question that Prof. Dr. Stefan Timmermanns, Professor of Sex Education and Diversity in Social Work at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt UAS). In his essay “Sexual Education as well as Sexual and Gender Diversity in the Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work”, he highlights how sexual education can be successful in specialist training. He refers in particular to social work training at his own university, the Frankfurt UAS. “Sexual pedagogical competence and the conscious handling of sexuality, physicality, closeness and distance are as omnipresent as necessary in social work. In Germany, however, there can be no talk of a comprehensive anchoring of sexual education in initial training ”. With his essay, the educationalist participates as a co-author of the publication “The German-speaking Sexual Science: Inventory and Outlook”.
“Without sexual education, there is a risk that border crossings or devaluations will have a negative impact on the development of identity, which can ultimately lead to abusive or aggressive behavior towards oneself or others,” says Timmermanns. “To prevent this from happening, it is important from an early age and is primarily aimed at treating physicality, nudity, boundaries and feelings of shame with respect. At the same time, a positive experience of the body should be supported in order to promote self and body awareness. “
Prof. Dr. Heinz-Jürgen Voß, University of Merseburg, published volume “The German-speaking Sexual Science: Inventory and Outlook” brings together contributions from numerous sexologists and educators from German-speaking countries. Those interested can get an insight into the book at an online book launch on November 16, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. The evening will be hosted by editors Voss, Timmermanns and Esther Elisabeth Schütz, co-author and managing director of the Institute for Sex Education and Sex Therapy in Uster.
