Sex education in schools is often still very old-fashioned

The content of that one sex education lesson is mainly about preventing STDs and unwanted pregnancies. The biology book contains pictures of drippers and other STDs, but that image about sex is no longer of this time. “Pure scaremongering,” says Smith. In this day and age, good sex education is very important, but then you have to broach topics such as boundaries and consent.

Vulnerability

According to Smith, shame and vulnerability are the reasons that sex education is no longer up to date. “As a teacher you are very vulnerable and for younger people it is a subject to giggle about. The inconvenience is on both sides.” STD AIDS Netherlands is therefore in favor that the subject is not only taught by the biology or social studies teacher.

Sexting

Sexting is also new in the field of sex education. Almost every student has a smartphone in their pocket and with that it happens more and more that sexual photos are sent to each other. Bee The Wild In The Afternoon Smith explains the importance of teaching young people about sexting.
