Sewage Pollution in Gran Canaria Beaches: Permanent Closure and Health Risks Revealed

Taking a dip in the sea from a great beach is something most of us appreciate, but not all places have the same idea.

In Gran Canaria, the authorities have now found themselves having to permanently close one of the island’s beaches to swimming due to large amounts of sewage in the water.

Removed from list

We are talking about El Confital beach in Las Palmas, which has previously been one popular surfing and water sports spot.

There is persistent pollution of the water five years in a row, which means that the beach is now removed from the list of bathing areas and receives a permanent bathing ban, reports Canariavisen.

– Swimming is still prohibited, and the beach will continue with a red flag. The only thing that has changed is that the Directorate of Public Health has written off El Confital as a bathing area, in accordance with the law. It is a mere administrative formality, says head of the Town and Sea department in the municipality, Pedro Quevedo, according to the newspaper.

The municipality has not got to the bottom of where the pollution is coming from.

– Yes bro!

Scrutiny

However, this is not the only place on the island affected by sewage discharges.

A local organization in the Canary Islands, the Canarian Business Association of Environmental Consultants, is sounding the alarm about the sewage situation on the Norwegian holiday favourite.

This was reported by the Spanish newspaper Canary Islands weather recently.

According to the organisation, they have uncovered 300 different places where polluted waste water is released into the sea and that 100 million liters of waste water flows into the sea every day.

They now want the authorities in the Canary Islands to form an investigative commission to cover the sewage situation and want to find out the health risks for those who bathe in the water.
