Sewage Gas Leak Sparks Emergency Response and Evacuation at ARA Winterthur

Due to a defect, sewage gas escaped on Saturday afternoon (June 10th, 2023) in the ARA Winterthur.

There was a gas alarm at ARA Winterthur around 3 p.m. Sewage gas escaped through a leak in the gas bellows of the gasometer. Because gas incidents always involve certain risks, experts have defined a safety zone of four hundred meters around the gasometer. Numerous emergency services from the fire brigade and police cordoned off the area around 5 p.m. and accompanied around a hundred people from the area (see also the report from yesterday.

After the gas was able to escape from the defective system on its own and there was no longer any danger, the area was released again around 9:30 p.m.

In addition to the Zurich canton police, the Winterthur city police, the fire brigade and civil protection from Schutz & Intervention Winterthur, the Neftenbach fire brigade, SBB Intervention, the Zurich Forensic Institute (FOR), an inspector from the GVZ, the AWEL, and the Winterthur rescue service were on duty .
