Sevilla’s Unfortunate History in the European Super Cup

Athena

Sevilla perhaps the king of the ‘Friday Night League’ aka Europa League. Different story achieved The Basins Of European Super Cup: Completely lost!

Manchester City vs Sevilla served in European Super Cup 2023. The match took place at Karaiskakis Stadium, Thursday (17/8/2023) in the morning WIB.

Man City appeared dominant for 2×45 minutes. The Citizens recorded 23 shots (7 on target) and 74 percent ball possession, far ahead of Sevilla who could only make 8 shots (4 on target) and 26 percent ball possession.

Even so, Sevilla managed to steal the first goal in the first round. Youssef En-Nesyri broke into Man City’s goal with a header.

Man City replied in the second half via Cole Palmer’s goal. The 1-1 score lasted until the long whistle sounded and the duel went to penalties.

Nemanja Gudelj becomes a prisoner in the high-five round. The Sevilla defender was the only penalty taker who failed to score the ball into the goal.

Gudelj’s penalty shot hit Man City’s goal. Meanwhile, all 12 executors for Man City managed to complete their duties perfectly and ensured a 5-4 win over Sevilla.

The defeat of Man City added to Sevilla’s row of bad achievements at European Super Cup. This is the sixth successive failure of the owner of seven Europa League trophies to dominate the European Super Cup.

Of the seven times that Sevilla has participated, they won only once when they made their debut in the European Super Cup in 2006. Sevilla won 3-0 against Barcelona at that time.

Seville was subsequently unable to repeat a similar feat. The Basins had to settle for being the runner-up in the 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2023 editions.

Sevilla is also the team that has lost the most in European Super Cup history. In fact, Sevilla is the fourth team that has appeared in the competition the most times after Barcelona (9 times), Real Madrid (8 times), and AC Milan (7 times). Ouch!
