Sevilla Eliminated from Champions League: Lens Defeats Spaniards 2-1

Dec 12, 2023 at 8:54 PM Update: an hour ago

Sevilla will not extend the Europa League title this season. The Spaniards were eliminated from Europe on Tuesday with a 2-1 defeat against RC Lens in the final group match of the Champions League.

Both Lens and Sevilla had already been eliminated before the start of the mutual meeting for a sequel in the Champions League. In group B, PSV and Arsenal, who drew 1-1 on Tuesday, already had the tickets for the eighth finals in their hands.

A place in the interim round of the Europa League was still at stake in Northern France. Sevilla had to win for that. A draw was enough for Lens to finish third in the group.

Lens took the lead in the second half through a converted penalty from Przemyslaw Frankowski. Ten minutes before the end, Sevilla came alongside. That took some effort, because initially Sergio Ramos’ penalty was cleverly saved by Lens keeper Brice Samba.

Because the French-Congolese goalkeeper had left his line too early, Ramos was allowed to score again. This time he hit the target with a panenka just under the crossbar. It heralded an exciting final phase. In the sixth minute of injury time, Angelo Fulgini made the decision from the counter: 2-1.

For example, Lens can look forward to European football after the winter and Sevilla must focus on La Liga, in which it is only sixteenth. The club from the south of Spain won the Europa League no fewer than five times: in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020 and therefore 2023.
