Heavy rains and gusts of wind already caused damage in large parts of Northern California on Tuesday: in San Francisco, more than 700 trees were blown down or damaged. The storm also destroyed the windows of apartment blocks and tens of thousands of people were temporarily without power. There were also reports of damage to roads, flooding and landslides.
The state has been hit by severe weather since January, although the region has often suffered from drought and aridity in the past during the same period.
