A winter storm brought freezing winds and heavy snowfall to many areas of the US. Thousands of households were left without electricity, many trips were cancelled.
The storms will be followed by arctic cold over the weekend, with temperatures dropping to -45° in some areas.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning for almost all states, with heavy snowfall expected on Saturday from the far west (Oregon) to the easternmost areas (Maine).
On Friday, much of the northern Midwest was covered in blizzards with heavy snow and strong winds of up to 96 km/h. The National Weather Service warned that they are expected to continue into Saturday.
The extreme weather forced the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights on Friday. Nearly 200,000 people are without power, with Michigan and Wisconsin hardest hit.
