Severe weather is heading our way, tomorrow even a chance of tornado

“It can really be a storm tonight,” says Nicolien Kroon. She talks about ‘a lot of precipitation’. There can also be hail in between and heavy wind gusts can also occur. It is not yet clear where most of the rain will fall. “It remains exciting where the center of gravity will be.”

Code yellow

The KNMI has issued code yellow because of the approaching heavy showers, there is a chance that this will be scaled up to orange.

The European radar shows that at the moment France gets the full blast. Earlier there was severe weather in Spain. Images of flooding in Morella are circulating on social media:

Chance of a tornado tomorrow

Tomorrow morning those showers will slowly move out of the country via the north. Around 2 p.m. new showers will arrive, again from Zeeland and West Brabant. In some places, 40 millimeters of rain can fall in one hour.

It may even be a local tornado. According to the KNMI, a tornado, also called a whirlwind, is ‘not completely ruled out‘. The meteorological institute is taking into account the formation of so-called supercells, which is the heaviest type of thunderstorm, before tomorrow afternoon.

Mesocycloon

A tornado can form if the wind speed and direction in the upper layer differ greatly from that in the lower layer. When the warm ascending air current and the cold descending current start to rotate against each other, a ‘mesocyclone’ – a rotating storm area with a diameter of several kilometers – is created, which can again lead to a tornado. A supercell can remain active for hours and is accompanied by heavy rain and hail, gusts of wind and a lot of lightning.
