At least ten people were killed in severe weather in eastern Australia over Christmas. According to police, the youngest victim is a nine-year-old girl. Tens of thousands of households in the northeastern state of Queensland temporarily had no power.
In Australia, heavy thunderstorms on December 25 and 26 were accompanied by large hailstones, storms and torrential rain. The rain caused rivers to flood and strong winds blew away roofs and toppled trees.
The storm killed six people in Queensland and two in Victoria state. In those states and in New South Wales, at least 90,000 households still have no power.
Three men died when their boat capsized due to heavy weather in the bay where the city of Brisbane is located. Another victim ended up under a fallen tree. The other victims were swept away by floodwaters in various places.
Queensland’s premier called the storms “unprecedented”.
