Tornado Watch Issued for Sullivan County as Severe Thunderstorms Threaten the Area
August 12, 2023 - The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Sullivan County until 9 p.m. tonight. This comes as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for most of the area until midnight. CBS New York has placed the region on Yellow Alert due to the threat of strong-to-severe thunderstorms that may occur from now through the overnight hours into early Sunday morning.
While most of the thunderstorms in the area have been sub-severe so far, the showers and storms are expected to come in waves. One wave is currently moving through, with subsequent rounds expected after 6 p.m. The strongest wave is anticipated to approach by the midnight hour.

At the same time, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for a majority of the area and will last until midnight. CBS New York has designated the region as being on Yellow Alert due to the anticipated arrival of strong-to-severe thunderstorms from now until early Sunday morning.
Although most of the thunderstorms experienced in the area so far have been below severe levels, there is an expectation of the storms arriving in successive waves. Presently, one wave is passing through the region, and additional rounds are expected after 6 p.m. The most powerful wave is projected to approach around midnight.
These storms pose various risks, including damaging winds, hail, torrential rainfall, and the potential formation of one or two tornadoes. Damaging winds are likely to be a significant concern.
