– It might not be this weekend that I would have chosen to go on a mountain trip, says state meteorologist Dina Stabell.
First smooth, then wet
As early as Thursday evening, temperatures in Western Norway are rising. Falling snow will turn to rain during Thursday. The rain freezes when it hits cold ground and meteorologists have therefore issued an ice warning.
– It’s good to be aware of that if you’re going out for a drive and also walking as far as possible, says Stabell.
As the temperature rises, the danger of slippery roads will cease. However, it will be replaced with the risk of landslides, soil and slurries. This danger occurs on Saturday morning.
In addition to rain, there will also be some wind.
Risk of flooding and landslides
From Saturday to Sunday, a yellow danger level has been announced for soil, slush and flood avalanche danger in Vestland county and parts of Rogaland.
– The reason is the expected weather change, which is coming in with a lot of rainfall and higher temperatures, says hydrologist at NVE, Seija Stenius.
Because of the cold weather, the ground is frozen. This means that it does not absorb as much rainfall as it would if it were dry, says Stenius.
Particularly vulnerable areas are, according to the hydrologist, steep slopes and streams or rivers with a large water flow. On gentle slopes, slush avalanches can form and water can accumulate. This in turn can lead to flash floods.
Stenius refers to the flood warning’s advice to stay away from areas where there is a risk of flash floods. In addition, it is encouraged to keep gutters, basins and other waterways free of ice, snow, twigs and moss. Clogged waterways with dammed water can lead to landslides.
– If you tend to have problems, you should secure values, she says.
Due to the danger of slippery roads and stormwater, Stenius believes it is important to keep up to date.
– Roads may be closed. Check State Highways Authority for information, she encourages.
The rain is back
Night to Saturday, the rain has fully returned to Western Norway. From Friday to Saturday night, it can rain up to one hundred millimeters. Precipitation comes as rain high up in the terrain.
A warning of heavy rain has also been sent out on Saturday.
– A lot of rain is expected, 60-80 mm, locally 100 mm/24h. Tele in the ground can lead to increased stormwater, reports Yr.no
The rain continues and we have a wet Sunday ahead of us, and it will continue like this throughout the week.
– It will be wetter and milder in the future, says Stabell.
