The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued weather warnings for some parts of the country in North Rhine-Westphalia. There were isolated threats of locally strong thunderstorms and heavy rain over the course of the evening with quantities of up to 35 liters per square meter in six hours. Official warnings continued late on Thursday evening active before squalls.This weather ticker is constantly updated.
Update from September 21st, 10:13 p.m.: The last official warnings from the German Weather Service about strong thunderstorms in North Rhine-Westphalia have now expired. The weather service is now warning of squalls with speeds of up to 75 kilometers per hour in the east of North Rhine-Westphalia. The DWD expects the weather situation to calm down on Friday night. However, there is a risk of local thunderstorms again during the day.
DWD warns of strong thunderstorms with squalls and heavy rain in North Rhine-Westphalia
Update from September 21st, 9:25 p.m.: The storm front is moving further and further east. Official weather warnings from the German Weather Service for strong thunderstorms with squalls and heavy rain are currently still in effect for some districts in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Warendorf district, the Gütersloh district, Bielefeld, Lippe district, Paderborn district, Höxter district and the Hochsauerland district are affected. The DWD predicts that the thunderstorms will move towards the east on Friday night (September 22nd).

Strong thunderstorms, squalls, heavy rain: official weather warnings from the DWD for parts of North Rhine-Westphalia
Update from September 21st, 8:20 p.m.: The German Weather Service has now given the all-clear for some regions in North Rhine-Westphalia. But official warnings of strong thunderstorms are still active, especially for the east and southeast of North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition, gusts of wind are sweeping through the affected districts at speeds of around 75 kilometers per hour and heavy rain with precipitation amounts of up to 25 liters per square meter is falling on people. The warning applies to the following regions:
Warendorf district, Gütersloh district, Soest district, Paderborn district, Hochsauerland district, Märkischer district, Olpe district, Siegen-Wittgenstein district, Oberbergischer district, Rhine-Sieg district
Update from September 21st, 7:20 p.m.: Many of the DWD’s official weather warnings have now expired. However, the weather service continues to warn of strong thunderstorms in some cities and districts. Storm gusts with speeds between 65 and 85 kilometers per hour and heavy rain with precipitation amounts of between 15 and 25 liters per square meter also still occur there. Update from September 21st, 6:30 p.m.: Official weather warnings from the German Weather Service for strong thunderstorms with heavy rain and squalls are currently active for large parts of North Rhine-Westphalia. According to the weather service’s current warning situation report, these are expected to subside quickly on Friday night and move towards the east.
Official weather warnings for NRW: Strong thunderstorms in parts of the state
Update from September 21st, 6:08 p.m.: In the west of North Rhine-Westphalia the weather situation is currently calming down again. There are now the first warnings for this in the western Sauerland and Siegerland as well as in the region around Münster.
Update from September 21st, 5:35 p.m.: The thunderstorm warnings are gradually moving further and further east. There is currently a warning strip from Saarland, across Rhineland-Palatinate, to Münsterland in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition, in some regions there are also official warnings about gusts of wind.
Thunderstorm warnings in Dortmund and the Bergisches Land
Update from September 21st, 5:11 p.m.: There are now thunderstorm warnings from the German Weather Service in Dortmund, large parts of the Bergisches Land and southern Münsterland. This means that almost the entire western half of NRW is currently colored orange. According to a weather radar from Kachelmannwetter, there are currently thunderstorms mainly between Duisburg and Essen and between Bonn and Cologne as well as in the Rhein-Sieg district.

Update from September 21st, 4:48 p.m.: The DWD’s thunderstorm warnings have been significantly expanded again. Warnings are now also active in Cologne, Bonn and large parts of the Ruhr area. Local thunderstorms are approaching from the southwest. There are squalls with speeds between 70 km/h and 80 km/h as well as heavy rain with precipitation amounts of between 15 l/m² and 25 l/m² per hour and small-grain hail,” says the warning for Cologne, for example.

Thunderstorm warnings in the greater Düsseldorf area
Update from September 21st, 3:24 p.m.: There are now also warnings of strong thunderstorms in the greater Düsseldorf area. The warning applies equally to the Rhine district of Neuss, parts of the Mettmann district, Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, the east of the Viersen district, the southern half of Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr. The warnings apply here from 3:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Update from September 21st, 2:44 p.m.: In the very southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia there are the first official warnings of thunderstorms from the DWD. This affects parts of the Euskirchen district and the Aachen city region. “There are local thunderstorms coming from the southwest. There are gusts of wind with speeds of around 65 km/h as well as heavy rain with precipitation amounts of between 15 l/m² and 25 l/m² per hour and small-grain hail,” says the DWD for the areas. The warnings initially apply from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Rain front over the Netherlands and Belgium
Update from September 21st, 12:21 p.m.: A major rain front is currently over the Netherlands and parts of Belgium. It is still mostly dry in North Rhine-Westphalia. The greatest risk of rain is currently in eastern Siegerland, as shown on a weather radar Stove man water you can see. The DWD still expects widespread rain in the country “from midday onwards”.
The first thunderstorms are expected in the west during the day
Update from September 21st, 9:09 a.m.: According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the thunderstorms expected in North Rhine-Westphalia today should first occur in the west from midday onwards. Update from September 21st, 6:14 a.m.: In the afternoon there is a risk of isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy rain in NRW today. From midday onwards, “splashes of showery rain” will move through the state from the west, explains the German Weather Service (DWD). This rain is expected to spread across the entire area of North Rhine-Westphalia in the evening. The amount of heavy rain is around 35 liters per square meter in six hours; even small-grain hail is possible. It will also be windy in North Rhine-Westphalia: gusts of between 65 and 80 km/h could come from the southwest.
Thunderstorms, heavy rain and squalls in North Rhine-Westphalia – DWD forecast for Thursday
First report from September 20th, 10:12 p.m.: Cologne – The DWD forecast for Thursday has worsened again. While heavy rain and only a few thunderstorms were previously expected, the DWD further specified its warning situation report for North Rhine-Westphalia on Wednesday evening.
Rain on Thursday in North Rhine-Westphalia: “Locally up to 35 l/sqm likely in six hours”
Accordingly, on Thursday there is a threat of “strong thunderstorms with heavy rain between 15 and 25 l/sqm in an hour, small-grain hail and gusts of around 80 km/h, especially from the center to the east”. Basically, the day should start out very cloudy. According to the DWD forecast, it will only be initially clear in the east.
During the morning heavy rain will come in from the west. In the following hours the rain is expected to spread to the rest of North Rhine-Westphalia. “Local quantities of up to 35 l/sqm are likely in six hours,” said the weather experts. The temperatures remain at a relatively warm 21 to 24 degrees.
The weekend will be autumnal – then Indian summer will follow
The good news: The rain is expected to ease from the west on Friday night. On Friday itself it will remain partly cloudy. A few showers are possible again during the day. Especially in the afternoon they can be a bit stronger in the western half. Temperatures drop to a maximum of 20 degrees.
At the weekend it should become more autumnal with temperatures below 20 degrees. After all, calendar autumn begins on Saturday (September 23rd). But: It will be a little warmer again in the new week. The chances are even good for an Indian summer in the last week of September. Well over 20 degrees are expected on several days.
