Severe Thunderstorms and Flooding Strike Northwestern Bulgaria

Significant rainfall is observed over northwestern regions of the country. Thunderstorms formed between Kyustendil and Pernik on Friday night. Significant rainfall also falls over Sofia and Dupnitsa.

Heavy rains managed to flood Pernik, and hailstones hit Kyustendil.

Users on social networks are alarming that the downpour poured into Pernik for two hours. According to data from Meteo Balkans, about 20 l/sq.m fell there in just one hour. Photos of flooded streets in the city have surfaced online, showing water almost covering the tires of even buses.

On Friday, forecaster from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology Anastasia Stoycheva predicted significant amounts of precipitation on Saturday. In most of the country, 30-40 l/sq.m are expected, but in Western Bulgaria and the Rilo-Rhodope region, quantities of the order of more than 50-60 l/sq.m, including 100, are possible.
