SOUTH BOHEMIA – Meteorologists have issued a warning against very strong thunderstorms that may appear in the south-west of Bohemia on Tuesday, September 3 in the afternoon. The storms will be local and may be accompanied by heavy rain and hail. According to meteorologists, weaker storms are already forming in Šumava at the moment.
“In the west and south-west of Bohemia there is a lot of moisture and therefore also available energy. Other parts of our territory are already affected by drier air, which is why we expect the focus of convective activity to be there. Due to the absence of significant flow, the storms will be unorganized, mostly of short duration, almost stationary without significant movement, but they can also be intense in the short term. They will also have a typical daytime course, the maximum storm activity will be during the afternoon and early evening, they will weaken and decrease during the evening,” inform meteorologists.
The greatest danger will be torrential rainfall with short-term totals of around 50 millimeters, exceptionally the totals may be even higher. “Especially in areas where the area is already more saturated after previous rainfall, local flooding may occur or there is a higher risk of flash floods,” warn meteorologists, adding that storms can also produce hail of around two centimeters and wind gusts of around 70 km /h. “After all, on Monday we also recorded several centimeters of hail and decent precipitation totals in Kaplicka in southern Bohemia and even in the evening in Vysočina,” the meteorologists point out. Thunderstorms will gradually weaken during the night, but will reappear during the afternoon on Wednesday, September 4, short-term rainfall totals may reach over 30 millimeters.
