Severe storms ravage: – Slippery road and canceled ferries

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued 55 danger warnings for storms, strong gusts of wind and gales in large parts of the country, from Berlevåg in the north to Kristiansand in the south.

– We have sent out a danger warning for this year’s first autumn storm. There will be a strong south wind in the Norwegian Sea as a result of a low pressure, said Martin Granerød, meteorologist on duty at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, to Dagbladet on Wednesday morning.

The road crashed

The autumn storm has already taken over Lofoten, where a road between Sandsletta and Laukvika collapsed as a result of large amounts of water. No people were injured.

Bjarne Rystad was one of the first on the site when the road collapsed at two o’clock on Wednesday. The storm took Lofoten seriously on Tuesday night, he says.

– We are many who have seen accumulations of water in that area on several occasions. There were large amounts of water accumulating there today. The road safety is old so it can not withstand the amount of water, he says.

Rystad, who works as a fisherman in Lofoten, witnessed the hole in the road grow from two to ten meters wide. He blocked the road with a tractor so that no one would be injured.

– Opening in the road was there when I got there, but I saw it when it opened more from two to ten meters.

– I sat on the emergency turn signal and was shown away a foreign car. Now I have a car on one side and the tractor on the other, Rystad said Lofoten Post, who spoke to him first.

Warns

On Twitter, the Meteorological Institute writes on Wednesday night that there has been a lot of rain in Lofoten and outer Ofoten.

– Kanstadbotn in Lødingen south of Hinnøya got 74.0 mm until 20 o’clock, they write.

On the north side of Hinnøya, however, only 5.4 mm was registered, as a result of the mountains on Hinnøya capturing most of the moisture and letting it fall over Kanstadbotn.

Meteorologist Martin Granerød told Dagbladet on Wednesday morning that the whole of Troms and Finnmark can expect gusts of 25 to 33 meters per second.

– There is even a possibility that there may be gusts of wind up to 35 meters per second, but it is not certain that there will be quite as strong winds, he said.

The meteorologist warned in particular against going out in a boat on Wednesday and Thursday.

– You should be careful if you are going out in a boat today and tomorrow. People who are used to being at sea know what to do. It is absolutely not recommended to go out in a boat today if you are not used to being at sea, Granerød said.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration also took to Twitter on Wednesday night, where they asked everyone with leisure boats to check that the boat is moored for a storm.

Earlier Wednesday, the Norwegian Coastal Administration had to salvage a leisure boat that had struggled in the storm. Storms and a lot of sea led to the boat being hoisted on board instead of being towed ashore, they write on Twitter.

Another summer day

Despite autumn storms in large parts of Norway, people in Eastern Norway can enjoy weather of the milder kind.

– Throughout the afternoon, Eastern Norway can also get temperatures up to 20 degrees, and possibly another summer day. The joy is short-lived, so enjoy it, writes the Meteorological Institute on Twitter.
