Severe Storms Move Into New York Tuesday – NBC New York (47)

What you should know

  • Temperatures are expected to top 90 degrees in the tri-state area on Tuesday, and with that comes the threat of severe weather.
  • It will be hotter and more humid on Tuesday, with highs above 90 degrees, which should increase the possibility of severe weather.
  • The entire tri-state area is in the possible severe weather zone, although the risk is greatest north and west of New York City, according to the latest forecast.

NEW YORK – Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the tri-state area Tuesday, bringing sudden heavy rains and winds to New York City and surrounding areas during the afternoon rush hour, potentially severely hampering traffic on afternoon hours.

Lightning, torrential rain and damaging straight-line winds are likely across much of the three states, though more severe conditions are expected north and west of the five boroughs at this point. Large hail and tornadoes are not likely, but cannot be ruled out.

Flooding is less of a concern because the storms are expected to move quickly and, while they are likely to produce heavy rain, they are not expected to linger long enough over isolated areas to pose a significant flash flood threat. Most areas will see less than an inch of standing water by the time the system moves out.

As for timing, the storms are expected to impact the tri-state area around 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., moving through the Poconos and Catskills by mid-afternoon and then reaching northern New Jersey and the lower Valley of Hudson between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. New York City may notice these conditions between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The system should pass Long Island and the New Jersey Jersey shore later, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The bad weather comes alongside an approaching cold front after a Tuesday that will feature rising humidity as actual temperatures rise above 90 degrees in Central Park.

However, those trying to cool off in the ocean should take precautions. The risk of rip currents on Tuesday is high, especially along Long Island’s south-facing beaches. The risk of a rip current off the Jersey Shore is more moderate for Tuesday.

THE WEATHER IN NEW YORK FOR TUESDAY

The storms will develop along an approaching cold front sliding in from the northwest. A line of thunderstorms (a squall line) will develop along that front and run through the area. The system could produce heavy rain, but it won’t move over a location far enough to become a true flood threat because it will move too quickly.

Tornadoes are not likely, but a spinning tornado cannot be ruled out with this system.

AFTER THE PASSAGE OF THE STORMS IN NEW YORK

The weather remains warm on Wednesday, with highs expected to exceed 90 degrees again in the New York City area. Temperatures drop back into the 80s on Thursday, when some spotty showers are possible, and should drop to the more seasonal mid-80s on Friday.

Then the mercury rises again ahead of what at this point appears to be another warm and mostly sunny weekend.

Saturday seems to be the ideal day, as the possibility of thunderstorms returns on Sunday.

Overall, summer will be in full force for the next 10 days, with temperatures consistently above the average high of 85 degrees, with humidity present for most of those days as well.
