Affected by the front and low pressure, widespread rainfall occurred in the eastern and northeastern regions of Japan. Strong winds blew in the Kanto region, including Tokyo, and some trains were suspended. More than 10 domestic flights from Haneda to Haneda were grounded. Mount Fuji also experienced a “slush flow” today (9th) that contained snow containing a large amount of water and flowed down along with sand and gravel. Fortunately, the snow and sand were blocked by sand control facilities, and no damage has been reported so far.

According to reports from Fuji News Network and NHK, the Japan Meteorological Agency stated that due to the influence of low pressure accompanying the front, widespread rainfall occurred in eastern and northern Japan. The rainfall in Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, reached 151 mm in the 12 hours as of 11:30 am. “Alert-level heavy rain” is likely to occur in Kanto this afternoon, and the rainfall in southern Kanto may reach 130 millimeters in 24 hours. The Meteorological Agency called on the public to be careful of landslides, flooding and river flooding.

The low pressure also caused strong winds in various places. The maximum instantaneous wind speed reached about 30 meters in places such as Unzendake in Nagasaki Prefecture and Nai in Okayama Prefecture. Strong winds of more than 20 meters suddenly blew in central Tokyo, causing cherry blossoms to blow to the ground. JR East said that due to strong winds, the Tokaido Line and Keiyo Line were temporarily suspended, and the Tokyo Bay Cross-Sea Highway was also temporarily suspended. On the other hand, ANA announced the suspension of some domestic flights taking off and landing at Haneda Airport due to severe weather. According to the official website of Haneda Airport, at least 10 domestic flights in Japan have been suspended today.

The Fuji Sand Control Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan stated that due to heavy rain, a snow and mud flow occurred at around 8:20 a.m. local time. The slush flow slid down from an altitude of about 2,100 meters on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures. Since the sand control facilities blocked the snow and gravel, no notification of the disaster has been received so far.

Mount Fuji has started to rain since the 8th. According to the “Onchu Road” observation point, the rainfall from 8 am to 9 am today was 23 mm. From the start of rainfall to 8 am, the total rainfall reached 88 mm. Snow and mud flows are still occurring. The Fuji Sand Control Office stated that it will continue to monitor and investigate the amount of sand and gravel in the future.
