What you should know

After battling the first heat wave of the summer, and in September no less, a ferocious round of storms hit the tri-state area for several hours on Friday. The area will see another round of strong to severe storms on Saturday afternoon, with strong Localized rainfall and flooding and damaging winds once again possible. Flash flood warnings, as well as a thunderstorm warning, were issued Saturday afternoon for parts of New Jersey and New York City.

NEW YORK — There’s a lot to clean up Saturday after the previous day’s storms toppled countless trees onto homes, cars and, in one case, a school bus.

After battling the first heat wave of the summer, and in September no less, a ferocious round of storms hit the tri-state area for several hours Friday afternoon. Downed cables and power outages to tens of thousands of customers were also blamed on the winds.

On Friday night, an estimated 30,000 customers were in the dark in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Saturday started off very muggy, with the lingering fog lifting as the morning progressed. The area will see another round of strong to severe storms Saturday afternoon, with heavy rain and localized flooding and damaging winds once again possible.

Flash flood warnings were issued for parts of New York City on Saturday afternoon, as was a thunderstorm warning for several counties in New Jersey and the Big Apple. These were due to expire by 5:30 pm on Saturday.

The possibility of scattered storms persists through Sunday and Monday, although their coverage and intensity is likely to decrease each day. The area will finally get a short break on Tuesday before another round of wet weather on Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures return to below 80 degrees.

So, when do you start to feel a drop in temperature? That will start to arrive on Sunday, when it will be noticeably cooler. The humidity will take longer to subside, however, and it won’t be until late next week when we see highs much closer to normal for this time of year, and not as much humidity.
