NEW YORK – A batch of storms is expected to complicate the weather conditions on Sunday, as they could cause flooding.
It’s hard to predict exactly where the heaviest rain would settle, but right now it’s likely just north and west of New York City. That’s where rain up to 3 inches or more is possible and could cause big problems on the roads.
The rain could start as early as noon and last for much of the day, at least until dinner time. Heavy rain will extend into Monday morning as a slow moving front moves through the region.
Who will be most affected by bad weekend weather?
The afternoon system is expected to be concentrated in northwestern New Jersey, the Catskills/Poconos, and the Mid-Hudson Valley. The threat of flooding increases in and around New York City through the remainder of Sunday night and through the Monday morning commute.
Prior to the approaching system, severe thunderstorm watches and flash flood warnings had already been in effect for a handful of counties expected to be in the path of the storms.

Flash floods will be one of the main threats of the day. Heavy downpours, which could bring 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour, are likely to cause problems for drivers.
In addition to the threat of flooding, there is a risk of damaging winds from severe storms Sunday afternoon and evening. Isolated thunderstorms could produce wind gusts of up to 60 mph in the afternoon.
The tri-state area won’t be done with the rain when it stops Sunday night.
Overnight Monday morning another wave of heavy rain is moving in, this time targeting New York, Long Island and Fairfield County.
