Severe Storm Alert: Thunderstorms, Tornado Risk & Safety Tips for Cedar Rapids Tonight

Your First Alert: Severe Storm Threat Overnight

As the evening approaches, residents of southwestern Iowa should prepare for potentially severe storms. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 11 PM, with the primary threats being damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of an isolated tornado.

Areas along and south of Highway 20 are expected to face the highest likelihood of experiencing strong to severe weather tonight. Conditions are poised to escalate with storm activity anticipated between 7 PM and midnight, moving from west to east.

Safety Precautions During Severe Weather

If storms approach your area, it’s crucial to take shelter indoors. Should a warning be issued, retreat to the lowest floor of your home, preferably away from windows. For tornado warnings, aim to put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Ideal shelter includes an interior closet or bathroom, while a basement provides the best protection.

Protect your head and neck with pillows, blankets, or a bike helmet if available. Individuals in mobile homes should vacate for sturdier shelters. If caught outside with no immediate shelter, lying flat in a ditch can be a last resort, ensuring to cover your head and neck. Avoid seeking refuge under bridges or overpasses.
