Two school buildings lost their roofs in Butembo following torrential rain that hit the town last weekend. This situation jeopardizes the resumption of classes, scheduled for Monday, September 4, fears local civil society, which is calling for the intervention of the authorities and humanitarian workers.

Eight classrooms in the Mizebere primary school no longer have roofs.

This worrying situation worries the president of the civil society of the commune of Bulengera, John Kameta, a few days before the start of the school year:

“The Mizebere primary school lost the roof on eight classrooms. There is also the Ngununu Institute, where a room has lost its roof, and four residential houses which have lost roofs in the same cell. Our cry of alarm mainly concerns primary school, as the start of the school year is just a few days away”.

The official schools, as approved, are being managed in “free” mode. So, he explains, parents no longer pay fees from which construction costs could be deducted.

This is why civil society we are sending a vibrant message to people of good will, humanitarian organizations and authorities, to see to what extent to assist this school.

The mayor of Butembo, senior chief commissioner Roger Mowa Baeki Telly, says that the town hall does not have the means to deal with this situation. However, he said he raised the issue with his superiors.
