Severe hurricane makes landfall in the Philippines, 98,000 people evacuated

More than 98,000 people have been evacuated in the Philippines due to Hurricane Rai making landfall. About 10,000 villages in the republic in Southeast Asia are on the route that the hurricane is likely to travel in the coming days.

The hurricane made landfall on Siargao, an island in the eastern Philippines. Soldiers and the coast guard helped residents who were trapped by the rising water. According to the national crisis team, no casualties or major damage have been reported so far.

The Philippine Weather Agency says Hurricane Rai, also known locally as Odette, is reaching winds of 195 kilometers per hour. Outliers of up to 270 kilometers per hour are also possible. The Philippine government warns of tidal waves and flooding. It is said to be one of the worst hurricanes to hit the country this year.
