Greece is suffering from a severe heat wave. A temperature of over 40 degrees was measured today at 87 weather stations across the country, the Greek public broadcaster reports. ERT. The authorities have taken a series of measures.
The Acropolis in Athens was closed from noon to 5 p.m. due to high temperatures. The Red Cross distributed thousands of bottles of water to tourists gathered at the attraction.
The decision to close the Acropolis was made only this morning:
‘We had a lot of incidents today, like people passing out’
First aid was given to a number of dehydrated people at the Acropolis. The ruins on the hill are notorious for high temperatures and little shade.
Construction workers and meal delivery drivers stop in the afternoon
During the hottest hours of the day, construction workers and food deliverers were not allowed to work. It is the first time that the Greek government has taken this measure, reports the British newspaper The Guardian.
The Acropolis will probably also be closed this weekend in the afternoon, because extremely hot weather is expected in a large part of Southern and Central Europe. It may even break the European record of 48 degrees in Sicily. The Italian authorities have issued a weather alert for fifteen cities. Residents are advised to stay indoors in the afternoon.
In the hottest place in Greece today, in Thiva, it was 44.2 degrees. This place is located northeast of Athens and used to be called Thebes. Temperatures above 42 degrees have been recorded in 14 places in the country.
Very exceptional weather
In Antalya, Turkey, it can reach 45 degrees on Saturday, inland the mercury can reach 46 degrees locally. In Spain, the maximums are still between 35 and 40 degrees during the weekend, but on Monday and Tuesday the temperature in Andalusia can rise to well above 40 degrees. In the first half of the week it can be very locally 44 or 45 degrees.
These are very exceptional temperatures, Weeronline reports. The heat can be partly attributed to warm air flowing into Europe from the Sahara desert, which warms further over southern Europe. Yet the extremely high temperatures are becoming more common in the warming climate.
