Severe Flooding Hits Burning Man Festival in Nevada

Heavy rains caused serious flooding in the US state of Nevada. The traditionally hot and dry state received two months’ worth of rainfall in just one day. The situation is worst in the Black Rock desert, where over 70,000 people were trapped in a mud trap at the alternative Burning Man festival.

For almost two days in Nevada, heavy rains do not stop. Thousands of households are without electricity, more than 100 flights were cancelled.

Bad weather caught the tens of thousands of visitors to the popular Burning Man festival in the Black Rock Desert off guard. The counterculture event, which started at the end of the 80s, traditionally ends with a spectacular burning of a 12-meter effigy, hence its name – “Burning Man”. Every year, its organizers warn visitors to bring food, water and everything necessary for their stay. But they were not prepared for a flood in the desert.

70 thousand people fall into a mud trap. Those who tried to escape with their cars got stuck in the clay soil. Others, including DJ Diplo and comedian Chris Rock, walked for miles until they reached an asphalt road. The two were rescued by a passing car. The rain in Nevada is expected to continue today, and it will be at least three days before the soil dries out and people can leave the festival.
