Severe Flooding Continues in Russia’s Orenburg Region, Ural River Reaches Critical Level

Heavy flooding continues in Russia’s Orenburg region, and the water level in the Ural River continues to rise.

In the city of Orenburg, the water level in the river reached 9.78 meters this morning, which is half a meter above the critical level, the city administration announced. Several districts in the city have been flooded.

Experts estimate that the water level in the Ural River will rise by another 30 to 70 centimeters, TASS reported.

The information collected by the authorities and made public today shows that a total of 12,800 houses were flooded in the Orenburg region, which borders Kazakhstan. Electricity supply has been cut off in several villages due to floods. Meanwhile, dissatisfaction with the authorities’ response to the floods and slow relief is growing among residents.

The floods were caused by the rapid melting of snow and ice in the Ural Mountains and rains that broke a protective dam near the city of Orsk. In the region, the water level in other rivers has also risen significantly, not only in the Ural River. The floods have hit Orska the hardest.

There are also floods in Kazakhstan, due to which 96,000 people had to be temporarily evacuated.
