15 minutes. A serious fire damaged the century-old Middle Church in New York’s East Village on Saturday, without fatalities, and forced firefighters to deploy more than 100 people.
The fire broke out around five in the morning in an empty building. It then spread to the nearby Protestant Church, the Middle Church, built in 1892, and the scene of historic events in the United States, according to local media.
Some neighbors have recorded videos of the well-known sanctuary engulfed in flames at night. The shocking images shared on social media prompted a broad response of solidarity.
The Reverend Jacqui Lewis, who serves at the temple, said through his Twitter account that the community was “devastated.” However, he assured that “no fire can stop revolutionary love”. In addition, she was grateful that there had been no deaths.

At around 10 am, the firefighters continued to work on the “6 alarms” fire – a category that involves a significant deployment of more than a hundred agents – but no fire was observed any more. according to the Department’s account.
The adjacent 5-story building suffered an accidental fire in February due to a power outage. At the moment, the cause of this new incident is not known, which sank its roof and floors, in addition to the roof of the church, according to the authorities.
They ask for donations
“Unfortunately it looks like it’s been pretty bad, the shrine is not in good shape and we have some beautiful Tiffany stained glass that have been lost,” Center Minister Amanda Ashcraft told ABC7.
Middle Church argued in a post that the Church “is not a building, but buildings matter,” so she opened a page to receive donations.
Thank you all for your support. It means a lot in our overwhelming grief.
The Church is not a building, but buildings matter. It is the house.
We’ll have more to say in the days to come, but here’s the link for anyone looking to donate. Https://t.co/Rtb3odKP9d
