Severe crisis for AUA mother Lufthansa

The AUA mother Lufthansa’s worst crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic almost completely erases the airline’s main business for the foreseeable future. As of next week, 95 percent of passenger flights will be canceled, announced Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr. Around 700 of the fleet’s 763 aircraft were on the ground. If the special flights for home travelers are canceled in mid-April, the flight schedule tends towards zero.

“This crisis hits us hard,” said Spohr. “There will be no normal business development for us in the coming months.” The travel restrictions and the drop in demand caused by Corona have dramatic consequences. However, the European airline group with the highest turnover can survive the crisis thanks to its financial cushion, drastic cost reductions and ultimately also with financial aid from the state.

At Tui Germany, meanwhile, employees should go on short-time work for half a year. The regulation agreed with the management applies from April 1 to September 30, according to information from the Group Works Council. The company therefore plans to introduce different proportions of short-time work in various areas throughout the entire phase. Details are currently still being negotiated, was heard on Thursday from the headquarters in Hanover. Tui has already decided to apply for state guarantees.
