Coronavirus history: It could be tough
If you are one of the people with the genotype E4 for apolipoprotein E, you not only have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s, but you could also experience a severe course of coronavirus. It doesn’t matter whether you already have signs of dementia or not. As a new study finds, many people with dementia are among the groups affected by the pandemic.
On the one hand, this is due to the fact that older people often suffer from this memory loss disease and are therefore often in nursing homes. So they largely belong to the risk group. The overall mortality rate among these sufferers is also higher. However, as a study by the UK Biobank has now found out, there could also be genetic reasons why the course of the coronavirus could be fatal.
Genetic factor increases Alzheimer’s disease
Data from over half a million were used for the study. These have been collected since 2006. Almost 400,000 participants of European origin were selected from this. Around 90,500 of the individuals had the genotype E4 in apolipoprotein E. This corresponds to a share of 28 percent. Apolipoprotein E is a protein that is important for our metabolism. It affects the function of the immune system. Those who carry genotype E have an 11 times higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. It is the main genetic factor that increases the risk of dementia.
Severe coronavirus history influenced by genetics
Of the participants examined, 37 people with the genotype E4 contracted the coronavirus. The prevalence is higher than in people with the genotype E3, which is more common in the population:
- Genotype E4: prevalence is 410 per 100,000 people
- Genotype E3: prevalence is 179 in 100,000 people

Since none of the 37 people suffer from Alzheimer’s, the researchers do not assume that a disease must be present in order to experience a severe course of the coronavirus. The participants were also somewhat younger than they could have been in the risk group of Covid-19.
This factor also increases the risk of a severe course of coronavirus. The lockdown measures influenced the course of Covid-19.
