Severe Conditions, Covid-19 Attack the Brain

PROKAL.CO,

LONDON – Covid-19 does not only attack breathing. In severe cases, it also attacks the brain and damage it. Impact, complications occur such as stroke, inflammation, symptoms of psychosis, and dementia. That is the findings of researchers published in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry Thursday (6/25).

“It is very important that we must continue to gather information to really understand this virus fully,” Sarah Pett explained as quoted by Channel News Asia. He is a professor at University College London who participated in the research.

In that study, there were 125 cases of Covid-19 in London which were observed on April 2-26. All are patients with severe conditions. Most brain complications are strokes that occurred in 77 patients studied. Most are over 60 years old.

A total of 39 patients also showed behavioral changes like confused people. That reflects his mental state has changed. Nine of them experience nonspecific brain dysfunction or encephalopathy, while seven people suffer from brain inflammation commonly called encephalitis.

Another researcher, Benedict Michael of Liverpool University, confirmed that their findings were an important first step to understanding the effects of Covid-19 on the brain. More detailed research is needed. The hope is that potential treatments can be found for patients.

Scientists must find out the best handling of Covid-19. Because, the pandemic might last a long time. In some countries the case is high. While on the other hand, a vaccine for the SARS-CoV-2 virus does not yet exist and will not be available quickly.
