Severe canine distemper detected in Arendal

Before the weekend, parvovirus was detected in a dog in Arendal, veterinarian Camilla Lilleholt at Agder Animal Clinic informs Agderposten.

The virus is highly contagious between dogs, but cats can also become infected.

It takes three to eight days from the time the dog becomes infected, until it develops symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, according to Lilleholt, who emphasizes that the mortality rate in dogs is over 90 percent if the dog does not receive treatment.

Dogs are vaccinated against parvovirus, but imports from high-risk countries increase the risk of import infection. Lilleholt therefore asks everyone to be critical of buying puppies and check the background of the puppy thoroughly.
