The appearance of a tick with “striped legs”, or “Hyalomma marginatum”, is of great concern in France, in particular in the south. According to informationfrom Figaro, this tick is extremely dangerous because it is potentially a carrier of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.
The tick in question can measure up to eight millimeters when it is an adult and generally runs on animals, horses for example. But it is also possible that the beast comes to take up residence on a human. And still according to the Figaro, this can become extremely dangerous, since the striped-legged tick can be a carrier of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, which kills several dozen people a year in Turkey. What worry the French!
The tick has already been seen in various departments in the south of France such as the Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, Gard, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and southern Ardèche. Experts from CIRAD (Center for International Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development) in Montpellier are still unaware of how it got to France, but they suspect that it could have traveled via a migratory bird or Spanish horses.
