The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office has carried out a police operation – called ‘Operation Plaga’ – thanks to which the arrest of at least 14 people, including public officials, linked to an alleged criminal organization that facilitated the release of prisoners.
This alleged organization is made up of police officers, former public officials, lawyers, secretaries and judges who would have been recruited “through the delivery of money or favors” in exchange for the prisoners “obtaining their freedom illegitimately” under an appearance of legality. .
According to the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office, the detainees are charged with the crimes of alleged influence peddling, collusion, bribery, illicit enrichment and money laundering, reports the Ecuavisa television network.
The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, has indicated that this operation represents “another blow against organized crime within the judicial system”, and has taken the opportunity to accuse previous governments for having been “lukewarm” with their response to crime.
«For years, the government has been lukewarm in declaring war on all these criminals, regardless of the sphere of power. Today we have the opportunity to change it and ensure continuity in this fight, where your weapon is your vote,” said the Ecuadorian president on the social network X.
For her part, the Attorney General of Ecuador, Diana Salazar, has used the same route to defend that the authorities must insist on their “purification” to put an end to corrupt practices such as the one carried out by the detainees on this occasion.
‘Operation Plague’ has been carried out in several locations in the country, as well as in Prison 4 in Quito, the country’s capital.
