Around 50 firefighters extinguished an apartment fire in the Hamburg district of Stellingen on Monday night. The fire broke out on the second floor of an apartment building.
The flames came from the back of the apartment building in Försterweg. The heat of the fire with temperatures around 1,000 degrees caused the plaster to flake off the walls of the fire apartment and the window panes shattered. Local residents heard a scream, saw the fire and dialed 911. The resident of the apartment on fire is said to have tried to put out the flames. The man inhaled toxic fumes and was burned to his face and hands. He could walk outside through the smoke-filled stairwell. Firefighters rescued another resident of the house from the building. A total of four injured people were taken to the hospital after they had inhaled smoke.
