At least 14 people have died after a fire in a fuel warehouse in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
The violent fire started on Friday.
– A large fire broke out in a fuel warehouse. At least 14 people have died and many others have been injured. Thousands have been evacuated after the fire spread to their neighborhood, an official said, according to the news agency AP.
The fuel depot is located near the densely populated area of Tanah Merah, in the north of Jakarta.
The fire service states that 37 fire trucks and 180 firefighters have been dispatched to fight the flames. It is unclear whether they have the fire under control.
Television images show people fleeing in panic from the area, as flames and thick, black smoke fill the sky.
The fuel stockpile covers 25 percent of Indonesia’s fuel needs. It is run by the state oil company Pertamina.
– The preliminary investigations show that the fire started after a pipeline burst during a storm with heavy rain and lightning, says area manager Eko Kristiawan in Pertamina.
