Several patients developed the spread of cancer while participating in a Norwegian cancer study. – We are very sorry. We should withdraw from this study, says head of department at Haukeland University Hospital.

Several patients who participated in a major Norwegian study on rectal cancer had the cancer spread. Some may have become ill along the way because they participated in the research project instead of having surgery.

At Haukeland University Hospital, the protocol was violated in connection with the cancer study. A larger proportion of patients were spread than expected.

In November last year, the Norwegian Norwait study was stopped. Up to one hundred patients were to be included in the study. The aim was to map whether radiation is enough for patients who have the least dangerous tumors, so that unnecessary surgery is avoided.

All seven university hospitals in Norway participated in the so-called wait-and-see study (Watch and Wait).
