The bus was attacked in the coastal town of Kismayo on Friday.
“They were on their way to the football stadium to play a local league match when the powerful explosion happened,” said police officer Sadiq Mohamud.
– We do not know the motive. But we believe that the terrorist group al-Shabaab is behind it, he says.
Al-Shabaab has not yet taken the blame, but the extremist Islamists have previously banned football matches in areas they have controlled.
The explosion could be heard all over Kismayo, where several politicians and candidates gathered on Friday for regional elections. President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo condemns the attack.
