He says that the perpetrators who attacked several places in the center of Vienna at 22.00 on Monday night, were heavily armed and seemed professional. A total of two people have now been confirmed dead after the shooting. One of them is said to be one of the suspected perpetrators.
Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told the national broadcaster CUSTOM at 22.00 that a large police operation was still ongoing. He described the attack as a terrorist attack, and confirmed by several may have been killed.

– Shoot wildly around him
Austrian police confirms that several perpetrators armed with rifles started shooting in Seitenstettengasse, a small street in the center of Vienna, at around 7pm on Monday night. One of the perpetrators who was shot by the police was wearing a bomb vest, according to ORF.
It was shot at six different places in the center of the capital, police say. A police officer is among the injured and his condition must be serious.
Eyewitnesses tell local media that at least one man, armed with an automatic weapon, is said to have shot wildly around him.
– You could see a person who ran down Seitenstetten, who shot wildly around him with automatic weapons, says an eyewitness to the Austrian newspaperKronen newspaper.
The witness says that the perpetrator ran on to another place.
– He continued to shoot wildly around him there as well. Then the police came and fired shots at him, the witness says.
Other witnesses told the newspaper that they heard “at least 50 shots”.
Unclear situation – deploying the army
Prime Minister Kurz says that the attack was clearly considered terrorism and that several perpetrators are still at large. There is still a large ongoing police operation in large parts of the city until Tuesday night.
At the same time, Kurz assures that the army is deployed to maintain security at the crime scenes, so that the police can focus their resources on anti-terror operations. The police have asked everyone to stay away from the downtown area and avoid all public transport. NTB reports that armed police have also asked pedestrians and cyclists to leave the city center, as well as asked cars on their way to the city center to turn around.
– We are experiencing difficult times for our country. I want to thank all the emergency services who risk their lives for our safety, especially today. The police will take decisive action against the perpetrators behind this repulsive attack, he says.
He says there is currently no information about the motive for the attacks.

The police in Oslo are following
On Friday, the Police Security Service wrote that they consider that the threat of terrorism from extreme Islamists in Norway has intensified from the last assessment this summer. The threat level is still moderate, but according to PST, it will take little before the assessment of the expected threat will be changed to probable.
– The synagogue in Oslo is an object with which the police already have a good dialogue in everyday life. We assess the situation continuously and have increased our vigilance towards vulnerable objects, says operations manager Line Skott.
In Copenhagen, Danish police blocked off several streets around the city’s synagogues already during the attack in Vienna. Skott will not comment on what specific measures the police have taken in connection with the attack in Austria.
Terrible attacks in #Vienna. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and the people of Austria. We must stand together against hatred and violence.
Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) describes the attacks as “terrible”.
My thoughts go to the victims, their families and the people of Austria. We must stand together in the fight against hatred and violence, she writes on Twitter.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte says there is “no room for hatred”, while French President Emmanuel Macron condemns the attack.
– We share the Austrians’ shock and grief after the attack in Vienna. This is our Europe. Our enemies need to know who they are dealing with. We will not allow this, the president wrote on Twitter.
