After an alleged knife attack on his wife of 42 years on Monday morning, a 41-year-old man left Linz for Leonding with several injuries and traffic accidents until he was dramatically arrested with several shots fired.

A policewoman and a policeman were seriously injured, the Upper Austrian state police informed in the afternoon. According to prosecutor’s spokeswoman Ulrike Breiteneder, the suspect has a relevant criminal record.

Allegedly out of jealousy, the Iraqi (with legal residence) stabbed the 42-year-old Romanian in the back and stomach at around 6.40am on Monday in the apartment. She managed to call the police herself before being taken to hospital and operated on. According to Breiteneder, her life is not in danger.
A few hours after the knife attack, the 41-year-old showed up at the woman’s workplace and, according to State Police Director Andreas Pilsl, threatened his alleged rival with two knives. The Iraqi then fled out of the city towards Leonding and caused two car accidents.
He first ran into an underpass, when he saw roadside checks as part of the alarm search, “head-on at two junior officers,” Pilsl reported. The 21-year-old policewoman and the 26-year-old policeman were seriously injured. The Public Prosecutor’s Office investigates for attempted murder.

Assault rifle robbery
At the scene of the accident, the man stole the police officer’s assault rifle and forced a driver to hand over the car to him. The injured policewoman fired another shot, but the suspect ran off until he fabricated the next incident a few kilometers further on, the Pilsl timeline provided.
He once again tried to force a getaway car – a white van – from a driver. He is said to have fired one shot. The police were later able to arrest the man. Officers also fired five or six shots. Nobody got hurt.
In a first brief interrogation, the man “rejected every crime,” Breiteneder said. The suspect is no stranger to the judiciary. According to the prosecutor’s office, he had already served a part-time prison sentence. He currently he no longer lives in his wife’s apartment because there is an expulsion order.

Bereitender could neither confirm nor deny reports that an eleven-year-old girl, probably the daughter of the 42-year-old Romanian, was in the apartment during Monday morning’s attack. Presumably investigations will also be launched into the case of the stabbing attack for attempted murder.
“The police officers acted quickly, consistently and highly professionally. This not only made it possible to arrest the brutal criminals, but also averted a danger to people living in Linz,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) in response to the crime.
