Several ICE stops are expected to be canceled from December due to construction work

Because of construction work

Südkreuz station could temporarily be omitted as a stop on some ICE routes

The train has to save time on the Berlin-Leipzig route – due to construction work at the end of the year. It could therefore remove Südkreuz station from certain ICE routes for around three years.

Berlin passengers traveling by train to Munich, Leipzig or Frankfurt may no longer be able to travel from Südkreuz from December. Because this stop could then disappear from the timetable of some important ICE connections for about three years. A Berlin Senate spokesman rbb | 24 confirmed these plans by the railways.

Construction work between Berlin and Jüterbog affects the timetable

Specifically, it should be about the ICE routes from Berlin to Munich via Leipzig and Nuremberg or Frankfurt, of which more than 20 trains per day stop at Südkreuz station according to the current timetable. The reason for the timetable changes are modernization work on the route section to Leipzig. The train protection system between Berlin and Jüterbog is being modernized here.

The construction work is to be carried out in sections during ongoing operations. The trains could continue to run between Berlin and Jüterbog, but not as fast as before. Only trains that travel faster than 160 km/h are affected. The time lost on this section of the route could be saved by not stopping at Südkreuz station. Corresponding plans for the railway appeared on Saturday in the web forum “Turntable Online” and were confirmed there at least in part by a member of the DB Fernverkehr board, Philipp Nagl. Nagl regularly comments on railway issues in the forum under his real name.

Planned works of the railway

In the future, the so-called “ETCS” (European Train Control System) is to be used. To put it simply, this is a kind of autopilot for the rails, which is intended to replace the classic traffic lights and make rail traffic safer. Adaptation to ETCS is a long-term goal for main routes in Germany and Europe. Deutsche Bahn awarded the contract for the modernization of this section last year, as can be seen from the relevant voluntary announcement on an EU portal.

Deutsche Bahn will neither confirm nor deny

He wrote in his entry that the “details on the timetable effects” of the construction work were still “in coordination” and explained how the conversion of the signal boxes should be carried out technically. When asked by rbb | 24, Deutsche Bahn initially did not want to give “any specific information about the timetable change in December 2022”. The company announced that it would provide “detailed information in due course”. In the future, ICEs would also stop at the station, it was also said in the written answer from the company spokesman – how many, the railway left open in its statement.

This is not a denial of the plans, after all there are other ICEs that stop at Südkreuz station. Routes that do not lead via Leipzig (and thus past Jüterbog) would not be affected by the timetable changes anyway. According to Deutsche Bahn, around 174,000 passengers use Südkreuz station every day. At least some of them could have to switch to the main station for a long time. Berliners and Brandenburgers who start their long-distance journey from there or travelers who come from BER Airport and change to the train, for example.

Südkreuz “important entry point” – Senate is informed

The Berlin-Brandenburg state association of the Pro Bahn passenger association describes the Südkreuz as an “important entry point” when asked by rbb|24. Its deletion would therefore be “of course difficult for the time being,” said a spokesman for the association. However, for the association, “construction work to improve the route is generally to be welcomed.” After all, this should improve driving safety in the long term. As a passenger association, one is not privy to the plans of the railway.

The situation is different in the Berlin Senate. The responsible administration for the environment, mobility, consumer and climate protection is aware of the plans, it said on request. And the Senate is relaxed: The main station has “enough capacity to handle the higher passenger numbers of the affected ICE lines very well,” said a spokesman. There are also sufficient connections to BER from the main station.

Regional traffic not affected

DB Netz AG, which is responsible for the rail network and thus also for the construction work, informed the transport companies concerned in good time. Regional traffic would probably not be affected by the restrictions and timetable changes anyway. And because this is only a planning status of the railways, this can also change – if the railways find an alternative to save time.
