Excess mortality

– During the heat wave, more than 500 people have died due to the high temperatures, said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

He adds that it is a statistical estimate. According to Sánchez, there has been an excess of mortality compared to the same time last year. These are not officially registered deaths.

The Spanish Prime Minister urges Spaniards to be extremely careful, adding that the climate crisis is a reality.

– This has nothing to do with ideologies. The planet is going through a climatic emergency, says Pedro Sánchez.

Over 1000 died

The death toll has also risen in Portugal after the heat wave.

The Portuguese Health Directorate reported 238 deaths from July 7-13. Now Health Director Graça Freita says that the death toll has increased to 1,063 from 13 July to 18 July. This is as a result of the heat wave.

On Tuesday, the director of health warned that the country must prepare to cope with the effects of climate change as the temperature continues to rise.

– Portugal is among one of the areas on the globe that can be more affected by extreme heat, Graça Freita added Reuters.

One of the most intense

The Spanish Meteorological Institute, AEMET, calls the heat wave in the country one of the most intense they have recorded.

– It is at least the third most intense heat wave when you look at its geographical distribution and length, says Beatriz Hervella, spokeswoman for AEMET.

According to Hervella, two previous heat waves have lasted longer. In 2015 there was a period of 26 days of extreme heat, while the heat wave in 2003 lasted 16 days.
