On Thursday, December 16, the Zurich City Police and Zurich Protection & Rescue moved out because of over a dozen container fires in districts 1 and 6.
Shortly after 1.30 a.m., the operations center of Schutz & Rettung Zürich received the message that a container was on fire on Letzistrasse. The emergency services of the Zurich City Police and Zurich Protection & Rescue, who were immediately deployed, were able to extinguish the container, which was in full fire, as well as another rubbish bin.
As a result, the city police and Schutz & Rettung Zürich received further reports about burning containers within a very short period of time. Within less than an hour, the emergency services deployed to over 15 different fire locations in districts 1 and 6.
This situation required reinforcement of the watch by the militia fire brigade (South Company), which was deployed together with the professional fire brigade from Schutz & Rettung Zürich. A total of three tank fire engines (TLF) were on the road for the fire-fighting work.
At around 2.30 a.m., a uniform patrol from the Zurich City Police arrested a suspect on Leonhardstrasse. The 20-year-old Swiss was taken to a police station for further clarification.
Detectives from the Zurich City Police have started the investigation. The amount of property damage incurred cannot yet be quantified. Nobody got hurt.
