A high-rise block collapsed on Monday at a construction site in Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos. Three have been found dead, and it is feared that dozens more have been trapped in the ruins.
Photos on social media show that the more than 20-storey building completely collapsed next to two other tall buildings on the construction site.
Rescue crews say many workers were trapped in the ruins when the building collapsed, but they can not confirm how many are dead or missing. Lagos police say three dead and three survivors have been recovered from the ruins so far.
The rescue work continues on site. Several construction site workers covered in dust say that dozens of their colleagues were in the building when it suddenly collapsed. The cause of the accident is currently unknown.
– About 40 people were inside, I saw ten dead because I climbed up, says the local worker Peter Ajagbe (26) to the news agency AFP on the spot.
The construction site is located in the Ikoyi district, one of the city’s prominent business areas. Dozens of residents had gathered at the accident site on Monday night to show their despair and frustration over a slow rescue effort.
