Saturday was demo day in Freiburg. A large demonstration by opponents of the Corona measures, including a small counter-protest, had started on the square of the Old Synagogue. Elsewhere it was about freedom.
Numerous demonstrators have been gathering on the square of the Old Synagogue in Freiburg’s old town since 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. A few hundred participants in a demonstration against the corona measures were already on site. At the start shortly after half past two, we passed the university library, down Belfortstrasse and then into the “Im Grn” district. According to an initial estimate by the police, there were around 2,000 people. When the demonstration turned into Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse at around 3:30 p.m. from Europaplatz, it could have been 2500 people. This also corresponds to the information provided by the organizers of around 2300 participants and would be around twice as many last time.
The counter-protest, however, was much smaller with around 50 participants. At the same time, a left-wing demonstration was started at Bertoldsbrunnen with around 500 participants, also after police tongues. The reason for this protest was the demolition of a once occupied house on Gartenstrasse, where an interim rally took place around 3 p.m.
Mask bid on “lateral thinker” demo
The police were also on site with a larger contingent and accompanied the demonstrations separately from one another through the city – also with the cavalry squadron. The officials tried to minimize traffic obstructions in the course of the afternoon – and were also there to enforce the requirements.
Because on Friday the administrative court ruled that the demonstration participants had to wear medical masks. Many, but not all, participants in the demonstration against the corona measures adhered to it.
