Several Cuban migrants traveling by bus through Guatemala are detained – 2024-05-13 15:40:58

Guatemalan authorities detained a bus carrying more than 50 irregular migrants, including Cubans, who were moving north with the aim of reaching the border with Mexico.

According to an official statement shared by the National Civil Police of Guatemala (PNC), the operation ended with the arrest of the bus driver, who was accused of transporting 54 foreigners from Colombia, Venezuela and Cuba.

In more detail, the authorities indicated that 17 minors were traveling in this group, and that the bus was stopped at kilometer 209 of route CA2, belonging to the jurisdiction of Colomba Costa Cuca, in Quetzaltenango.

After their arrest, the migrants were placed at the disposal of the Guatemalan Migration Institute to review their immigration status and determine if they could remain in the country or if they would be expelled.

The person driving the bus was identified as Denis, a 26-year-old young man who was taken to court accused of human trafficking.

“Bus pilot captured for transporting 54 people of different nationalities who entered the country irregularly (…)The detainee was placed at the disposal of the corresponding court and the 54 people were given the necessary support,” the authorities stated on social networks. .

Dangers of emigrating

Due to the economic crisis in Cuba, more and more people are trying to try their luck by emigrating to the United States, however, to do so they use irregular alternative routes that put them at risk of being detained or suffering an accident.

Just in early February, the Guatemalan government reported a traffic accident in which nine Cubans ended up losing their lives on a highway that led to the border with Mexico.

The incident occurred on the Pacific Route, and involved an agricultural truck (which transported the migrants), a motorcycle, and a sugarcane cage.

According to local media Free PressIn total, six men and three women from Cuba lost their lives, all of them of legal age.

The deceased were originally from Havana, Camagüey, Santiago de Cuba, Villa Clara, Ciego de Ávila, Santiago de Cuba and Holguín
