Eight surprising complaints have been filed in the United States against the Meta group, reports Business Insider. The object of these lawsuits? The group is accused of making young users of Facebook et Instagram deliberately dependent, for profit. For example, Beasley Allen Law, the law firm that filed the eight complaints, claims that young users were pushed into self-harm or developed eating disorders and insomnia due to a excessive use of both social networks.
These lawsuits were filed in Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas. The Meta Group knew “that its products and services were dangerous for children and adolescents still susceptible to influence, but it completely ignored its own information”, Andy Birchfield, lawyer for Beasley Allen, said in a statement on Wednesday (June 8).
One of the complaints was filed Monday by a Tennessee mother who claims heavy use of Facebook and Instagram has caused her 15-year-old daughter to develop suicidal thoughts and a penchant for self-harm. In the court documents, consulted by Insider, her lawyers highlight the notifications of the applications received all day by the teenager, and which make her addicted. She would also struggle with an eating disorder, severe anxiety, depression and insomnia. (…)
