Large parts of the Brussels municipalities of Ganshoren, Koekelberg, Jette and Laeken were affected by a power failure on Friday evening. The problems were identified by grid operator Sibelga at around 7.25 pm, and the power supply was restored everywhere around 1 am on Friday night.
The cause of the power failure lies in an incident that already occurred on Friday morning, says Sibelga. “Due to excavation work by a third party, an Elia cable was hit,” it sounds. “Elia manages the high-voltage grid, which supplies Brussels via 48 high-voltage posts. From these high-voltage stations, Sibelga takes over to supply the city with power. This defect was immediately absorbed by a spare cable from Elia.”
On Friday evening a defect occurred on that spare cable, as a result of which one of the high-voltage posts became without power.
“As a result, all the high-voltage cabins behind that supply parts of the municipalities of Koekelberg, Ganshoren, Jette and Laeken with electricity are no longer supplied. In the meantime, Sibelga’s technicians have already been able to supply a number of parts of the affected zone with power via circuits. given to hospitals, including UZ Jette.”
Sibelga then switched the power back on step by step in the various affected districts. Around 10:30 p.m., about half of the affected customers had power again, and the breakdown was resolved by 00:59, the grid operator says on its website.
