A couple of months ago, the homegrown alternative metal band Sever released their debut album, which has already reached more than 600,000 streams on Spotify, a remarkable figure. The group is also active in social networks, but 11 music videos of this group can be found on YouTube – not a bad indicator at all! So what are these “Severs”?
The group was founded in 2016 and consists of five promising musicians: Leonid Korenevsky (vocals), Pavel Trebuhin (guitar), Ilya Peškov (bass), Stanislav Kobelev (guitar) and Yevgenii Bratuschenkov (drums). Previously, “severi” appeared in such projects as “Rise the The Bait”, “Anotherway”, “MadFish”, “Freelancers”, etc., and each of them has several years of experience on the stage before the formation of the current group composition. The group has performed many concerts in Latvia and also in the Baltic countries, participated in rock and metal music festivals, sharing the stage with such stars as “Crazy Town” (USA), “The Slot” (Russia), “Wildways” (Russia), etc. According to their own words , their musical mood and style is determined by such musical genres as post-rock, alternative rock and post-hardcore, although, even if you only casually listen to the works of “Sever”, the closest parallels are rather drawn with nu-metal and alternative metal, but more specifically, with for the group “Linkin Park” and its counterparts.
PAR. The vigor and energy with which “Sever” approaches the promotion of its music is worthy of praise – the mentioned 11 clips are far from being filmed with a mobile phone, the album is also self-released and, although in a very limited version, is also available in CD format. Qualitatively recorded, qualitatively played – everything is fine in this respect as well. Alternative metal did not take root with us, for reasons we don’t understand, neither in its star days, nor even more so now, so it is a subjective pleasure that at least someone here continues to learn this field. And “Sever” has something to offer – “Animal” and “The Disease” must be recommended as the best tracks, “My Dream, My Agony” is good, “Red Room” and “Empty Promises” were also successful, the recording of which was helped by German bands “Annisokay” vocalist/guitarist Christoph Vishorek. When Leonid turns on a proper “Chester” in his voice, it’s quite good. It is especially recommended to listen while driving.
AGAINST. The biggest problem is that you have to listen to “Sever” almost ten times to catch even one of these tracks – the first few times it can only be used as background metal music. Will many spare the time for these ten times? Unlikely. The last two tracks on the album, ‘Noise In The Trees’ and ‘Do You Remember Me?’ they could probably not be included in it, they don’t make any sense either… And also – “Sever” has been heard “live” as well, and unless they were some particularly unsuccessful concerts, then in this area they will continue to grow and grow.
