The third day of the seventh pilgrimage “Towards the Cradle of the Prophet” began this Saturday in Chapeltique and ended in Ciudad Barrios, in San Miguel, the birthplace of Monsignor Romero.

During these three days, the eternal legacy of Saint Oscar Romero, who lived and died for his people, was remembered; the pilgrimage ended with a Eucharist at the cradle of the martyred bishop.

The route of the seventh pilgrimage is approximately 160 kilometers from San Salvador to Ciudad Barrios, north of San Miguel, and takes place during the first three days of August. It is a tradition and an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Monsignor Romero, assassinated on March 24, 1980.

The pilgrimage of Saint Oscar Romero to Ciudad Barrios has been held annually since 2017 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the martyred bishop.

Oscar Arnulfo Romero was born in Ciudad Barrios, San Miguel, on August 15, 1917. At the age of 24, he was ordained a priest in Rome. In 1943, he returned to El Salvador to begin his priestly life. On June 21, 1970, he was named bishop. Since 1975, he has been defending the human rights of the most vulnerable population.
