A 12-year-old girl from the Emberá tribe (indigenous people of Colombia) lived in the Santa Cecilia nature reserve, in the municipality of Pueblo Rico. According to Portafolio on June 21, she was abducted from her home. Several hours later, the mother found the child. As the AFP agency found out, the soldiers came across a 12-year-old when she was collecting agave near their camp. They imprisoned her and raped her for 17 hours.
The perpetrators of rape are between 18 and 22 years old. They were all recruits from the San Mateo Battalion and served compulsory military service. As The Guardian reported, they confessed to raping a child. They face up to 30 years in prison for this act. Colombia’s President Ivan Duque has announced, however, that he will demand that they be tried in accordance with the new law. On June 18, Congress passed a law stating that people charged with child sex offenses can be sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the act has not been signed yet.
According to CNN, according to UN data from 2019, every third Colombian woman has admitted she has been the victim of sexual violence. Most of the victims are minors. According to data collected by the Colombian Foundation for the Killing of Women, in the first months of 2020, 5800 people under 18 experienced sexual violence.
